Transportation
The village itself is fairly compact, and the use of cars is now being discouraged, but there are plenty of alternatives of getting to Tignes and around the city, so the resort is overall very accessible.
By plane
The resort is accessible by bus from the airports in Chambery, Lyon and Geneve.
- Saint-Exupéry International Airport (IATA: LYS) is an important transport facility for the entire Rhône-Alpes region. Buses to Tignes Le Lac and Val Claret run 3 times a day from Sunday to Friday and journey time is about 3 hours and a half. On Saturdays, there are 5 shuttle buses.
- Chambéry-Savoie Airport (IATA: CMF) is a small international airport about 140 km from Tignes.
- Geneva Cointrin International Airport (IATA: GVA), though in Switzerland, can be easily accessed from France as well. Regular buses to Tignes cost 56€ for a one-way trip and 95€ for a round-trip.
By train
- The nearest train station is Bourg-Saint-Maurice, which is served by TGV and local services. It is the last large town along the Tarentaise valley in the heart of the French Alps and also the terminus of the railway.
- In the winter months, additional services operate; Eurostars direct from London, Thalys trains from Europe, and the ski train sleeper from Paris.
- This is some 35km away however, so coach services provide the onward connection; the journey takes about 1 hour 15 minutes in good weather.
Getting around
- The slopes are accessed directly from the village level ski lifts and cable cars; note that there are some 90 lifts in total.
- There is a free shuttle bus during season, connecting Tignes le Lac, Le Lavachet and Grande Motte 24/7. In fact, these local buses run continuously from 8.30 a.m. to 8.30 p.m., every half an hour from 8.30 p.m. to midnight and in the 6.30 a.m. – 8.30 a.m. interval, while between 12.30 a.m. and 6.30 a.m. there is an hourly service.
- The bus shuttle between Tignes le Lac and Tignes les Boisses runs every half an hour from 8.45 a.m. until 6.45 p.m.
